So my paintings have elements that are both hectic and serene. Berkeley, and their glowing landscapes also had a deep influence. Later, I was introduced to the work of Bay Area Figurative artists while studying painting at U.C. I came of age in 1980s downtown NYC when graffiti and hip-hop met punk. I’m influenced by New York City’s streets and the posters and writings that pile up on top of each other, creating layers of color and text. I listen to music when I am doing artwork it’s a big part of the process. As a teenager, I used to paint and write songs kind of like a hand off, switching between the two over the course of an afternoon. The opening night event included a one night only acoustic set by Jill, performing songs spanning the Luscious Jackson catalogue, as well as from her 2007 solo album, City Beach.Ĭommenting on the inspiration and process behind her paintings, Jill explained: “I’ve been painting my whole life. Then he told the miners to fill all these bags full of food. He went into the commissary and held his shotgun on the company men. He aimed to get it for them.ĭad went up to the commissary and took about five other men with him. But Dad, the reason he wanted the gun was some of the miners and their families was starving and they needed some food. So anyway, this night he come in after the shotgun, that was the night before the killings at Evarts started. So he went out and joined the other miners on strike. But they had been working him hard in those mines, night and day.

And I remember Mom a-beggin' him not to go out. He made us all get under the floor and told Mommy to keep us barricaded under there and not let us out. I remember Dad coming to the house and getting the shotgun and a lot of shells. Dad and the other miners had come out on strike and the gun thugs were after them. I think it was in the spring of the year, long about '31. But all this time, Dad was robbing the company store. I think he was the one that had the machine gun. But Dad's brother, Sam Hicks, was there at Evarts. And he worked with the union to make things better for the people.īut Dad wasn't at Evarts when the killings happened. Course, he'd been a coal miner all his life and they'd worked him day and night in those mines. Well, Dad took the blame for those killings. When all this murdering and killing happened over at Evarts, that was when the coal company hired gun thugs and they met up with the miners that was out on strike.
